Which iPad models can use Siri AI?

Siri AI supports iPad mini with A17 Pro or A20 Pro and iPad models with M1 or later, according to Apple’s setup article. You also need iPadOS 27 and eligible language and account settings. EU availability and expressive voices have separate restrictions, so identify your exact iPad before checking setup.

Identify the exact model and chip first

Apple’s setup article lists two iPad hardware groups: iPad mini with A17 Pro or A20 Pro, and iPad models with M1 or later. Start by identifying the exact model and processor. Screen size, purchase date, storage capacity and the word “Pro” alone do not establish that an iPad belongs to either group. A recently purchased tablet may be an older model, so its receipt date is not a reliable compatibility check.

As practical advice, consult the device information in Settings and compare its model details with Apple’s specifications for that exact configuration. If the chip is unclear, resolve that before buying an upgrade or troubleshooting Siri. Keep the hardware check separate from software installation: being able to install an operating system update does not establish eligibility for every AI feature.

Check iPadOS 27 and complete the setup

Apple’s consumer setup article places Siri AI on iPadOS 27. Its November 3 developer announcement separately describes the iPadOS 27.3 beta and new app integration preview. These references serve different purposes: neither establishes that every iPadOS 27.0 build must show the same entry point or provide every announced app action. Check the installed version alongside the other eligibility conditions before treating a missing option as a fault.

The documented setup path is Settings → Siri → Try Siri AI (Beta). If Siri is disabled, select Turn On Siri first. Follow the prompts to choose a voice, complete voice enrollment and review privacy settings. Apple says downloading begins automatically, although high demand can place you on a waitlist first. Waiting times vary; the article does not provide a guaranteed activation deadline.

Apply iPad-specific language and region rules

Apple’s setup article lists English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish as supported languages. The device language and Siri language must match and use a supported language. Choosing Spanish therefore addresses the language requirement, but it does not remove a platform or regional restriction. Apple’s developer announcement describes additional languages as coming soon; that wording does not establish their current general availability.

For iPad owners, the critical regional boundary is explicit: Siri AI is unavailable on iPadOS in the EU. Apple separately permits qualifying use on macOS and visionOS with an EU Apple Account and matching supported languages. That exception does not extend to an iPad using the same account. The setup article also says Siri AI currently will not work when the Apple Account region is mainland China. Check these conditions before changing language settings.

Separate basic access from expressive voices

The basic iPad eligibility list is broader than the expressive voice list. Apple’s setup article says expressive voices require the AFM Core Advanced on-device model and currently work only in English. For iPad, it specifically lists iPad mini with A20 Pro, plus iPad models with M4 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory. For those M-series models, both the chip generation and memory threshold matter.

An iPad mini with A17 Pro or an eligible M1 iPad can satisfy the basic hardware requirement without qualifying for expressive voices. Likewise, an M4 label alone does not establish the required memory configuration. If adjusting vocal pace and expressiveness is your purchasing priority, check the exact configuration against this narrower list. Do not confuse storage capacity with unified memory when comparing otherwise similar models.

Plan storage using the correct iPad group

Apple's Apple Intelligence requirements article separates storage groups. It specifies up to 14 GB for iPad models with M4 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB for other supported iPads. These figures describe Apple Intelligence across the system, not a measured standalone Siri AI download. Apple also says storage can temporarily exceed the requirement during and shortly after a software update while new models download and older ones are removed.

Apply the storage list independently of the expressive voice list. The iPad mini with A20 Pro appears in the expressive voice requirements, but that does not place it in the M4-and-later storage group. An external keyboard, additional iCloud space or an app subscription does not change the tablet's chip or unified memory. As preparation, review local storage and preserve important files before removing anything; there is no source-backed universal extra buffer to promise here.

Review accounts on shared, school and work iPads

Apple’s setup article describes personal context across information such as messages, mail and notes, and says the Siri app uses iCloud to sync conversation history across devices. On a shared iPad, the relevant question is whose account and information are present. As advice, review the signed-in account, connected services and setup privacy choices before using personal requests on a device that other people also handle.

School or workplace ownership does not, by itself, establish whether Siri AI is available. The cited documentation does not provide a universal management policy for every organization. If access is missing on an administered iPad, ask its administrator about the device’s configuration rather than assuming a particular restriction. Apple also states that Siri AI is unavailable to users under 13; compatible hardware does not override that age boundary.

Match onscreen tasks to documented app support

Apple’s setup article describes onscreen awareness, personal context and actions across apps. Its developer announcement names an Apple app rollout that includes Files, Mail, Notes, Photos, Calendar, Reminders and Safari. For iPad planning, these are relevant starting points, but the announcement does not promise every action in every app or platform. Its broader list also includes Finder, which should not be presented as an iPad app.

As practical advice, identify the app containing the material and the outcome you need before making a request. For work involving onscreen content, make the intended content clear and review any proposed result before relying on it. Third-party support needs separate evidence: Apple’s iPadOS 27.3 Developer Preview announcement does not prove that a particular public App Store release already offers the new integration. Existing Shortcuts support alone does not establish that either.

Decide what to check before upgrading

Use the documentation as a sequence of independent checks: exact hardware, installed iPadOS version, matching supported languages, eligible account and region, then completed setup. If your goal is expressive voices, add the narrower hardware and English-language requirements. This approach helps distinguish a hardware limitation from a waitlist or regional boundary. Buying a newer iPad does not resolve every condition, particularly the documented EU restriction on iPadOS.

For ongoing use, Apple says server-dependent features can have daily limits that vary with the feature, request complexity, demand and policy. It does not publish a fixed universal Siri AI allowance in these sources. As advice, keep a manual route through the relevant app for important tasks. If your existing workflow uses Shortcuts, assess its documented actions separately instead of assuming that Siri AI eligibility determines whether that workflow remains useful.

Common questions

Does iPad mini with A17 Pro support Siri AI?

Yes. Apple’s setup article explicitly includes iPad mini with A17 Pro, alongside the A20 Pro model. You still need iPadOS 27, matching supported device and Siri languages, an eligible account and region, and completed setup. The A17 Pro model is not included in Apple’s narrower iPad list for expressive voices.

Does every M4 iPad qualify for expressive voices?

No. Apple requires an iPad with M4 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory for this voice feature. It separately includes iPad mini with A20 Pro. Expressive voices currently work only in English. Check the precise memory configuration; storage capacity and basic Siri AI eligibility do not establish expressive voice support.

Can an EU account use Siri AI on both Mac and iPad?

The platform rules differ. Apple’s setup article allows qualifying macOS and visionOS use with an EU Apple Account when device and Siri languages match a supported language. It explicitly says Siri AI is unavailable on iPadOS in the EU. A working Mac setup does not establish eligibility for an iPad signed into the same account.

Why might a compatible school or work iPad lack the setup option?

Hardware compatibility is only one requirement. Review the installed iPadOS version, device and Siri languages, account region and age eligibility against Apple’s setup article. For an administered device, ask the organization about its configuration. The cited sources do not establish one management restriction that explains every school or workplace iPad.
